The Global Health Insurance Card is now issued instead of the European Health Insurance Card. We want you to feel safe as you travel to our beautiful country to explore all it has to offer. One of the best ways to help with this is for you to apply for your GHIC before you travel to Slovakia. This card will allow all EU citizens to benefit from receiving healthcare in all of the European Union countries. Having your Slovakia GHIC will allow you to access health centres and hospitals in the country. Please be aware that even with this card all patients have to pay a little bit towards the treatment, but these costs are very minimal. The standard of medical care on offer in Slovakia is good and you will be looked after.
Slovakia GHIC Card
We want you to visit Slovakia and if it something unfortunate happens to you when you are in the country we want you to be able to receive the medical care you require. Having your Slovakia GHIC Card means you can access the health care you need and you follow the same rules as a citizen of the country would. Having one of these cards, which you will need to carry with you at all times, means you can get the necessary medical care if you happen to have an accident or fall ill while travelling. If you require treatment while in the country then you must show your GHIC Card, for example a Luxembourg GHIC card. The GHIC Card only covers one person and it is valid for 5 years from the date it is received. If you are travelling as a family then all people travelling will need a card. If there is someone in your family or travelling party under the age of 16 then include their details on your application and they will receive a card of their own.

You are treated in exactly the same way as the residents of Slovakia as we want to make you feel welcome and want you to return to visit the country time and time again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to apply for a GHIC if I already have a valid EHIC?
No, you don’t. If your EHIC is still in date then this will still be valid and you don’t need to apply for a new GHIC until your EHIC expires.
What medical care does the GHIC cover?
The Global Health Insurance Card will cover medical care that is necessary at either a reduced cost or totally free. The cover also includes any treatment required for a chronic condition or historical condition that requires urgent treatment during the visit. The card will cover routine maternity treatment that could come up while visiting the country. If any oxygen or kidney dialysis has been pre-booked before the holiday then this will also be covered.
What isn’t covered by the GHIC?
The card is not to be used as an alternative to any travel insurance and the card isn’t valid on cruises. It will also not cover any costs associated with things such as mountain rescues or the cost of being flown back home if this is required. The card will not cover any of the costs associated with the treatment if the individual has travelled solely with the intention of getting medical treatment. The GHIC will not cover any costs if an individual travels to the country to give birth.
